Jamie was seven when she learned her chest made weather — and the weather had opinions. In the grocery store, between red grapes and green, her mother asked, “Which?” A haze unfurled behind Jamie’s ribs and slipped out in a thin ribbon. The fog whispered: not decisive, too slow. The produce guy blinked and kept stacking avocados. Mara zipped her hoodie and decided to keep quiet.

By middle school her sky had moods. Laughter made her chest go light. A classmate’s snicker brought low thunder: not funny, try smaller. She named the loudest because names made them less slippery. Catastrophe crackled and adored hypotheticals. The Blur draped gray over everything and preferred naps to decisions. Not Enough made lists and compared her to everyone alive.

At twenty-six she lived above a laundromat that sighed. She worked part-time at a botanica that smelled like orange peel and bravery. Customers bought clarity, protection, luck. Jamie labeled jars in careful script and kept her clouds from smudging the ink. On other days she drew — women with thunder for hair, apartments where fog behaved like furniture, kitchens lit by lightning in jars. The drawings felt most honest when her mist thumbed a soft sky across the paper.
